Why Does My Four Month Old Sheltie Puppy Have Such a Thin Coat?

I don't think you need to worry. Her coat will grow in eventually. And if does end up a little non-puffy then less to brush! No health issues to be concerned about though! Some coats are just better than others.

Also don't be swayed by the photos of the champions. They are all done up with chalk and other enhancers. I guarantee you that our babies don't look like every day.

Here are Indy and Bacca as they look most days at 18 months

You can see that their hair is still fairly short.

Sasha we did not raise through the teenaged phase, but you can really see a difference in her coat from age 13 months to now, 3 years old. She looked very lanky in her tail and legs at 13 months old - and it didn't help that her previous owner had beaten and starved her. Here she is two days after we rescued her, still with a raw place on her face and very malnourished but standing better as the vet has done the surgery on her paws:

Oh, um....I might also respectfully suggest that a little ear gluing might also be considered? That is something you CAN deal with right now

It's all about personal preference, of course. I gave up on ear gluing, myself, too early and now have Eeyore. But I do wish that I'd stuck it out another few weeks.

I was looking at Romeo's growth pics...and have to ask you. How did you train Romeo to go backwards like that?? Awesome!

Noneeds4me, thanks! That was a result of boredom (on my part!), lots of liver treats, and some moveable furniture pieces! Haha! Train backing up first, then use furniture to guide the butt as you lure!

Janeen, yes, I went and made teeshirts that say "you wish I'd treat you like my shetland sheepdog" and "sheltie mom" badges, and wear them proudly! Incidentally, I had to giggle when I saw your dog's name - "Paikia" in a chinese dialect (hokkien) means "gangster"!

I am still looking for the bumper sticker that states:

"My Sheltie is smarter than your honor student!"

When I find that one, it goes on the car!

Jan - have a look on Cafepress.com they have those bumper stickers and many more (I have the Sheltie Taxi one and a couple of plainer ones that I also put on their crates for when we go to training.)
